Feature film can be a powerful tool to use in intercultural training to explore cultural values and behaviors. At the same time, since our impressions of others are often shaped by media images, depictions of different cultures may also further perpetuate stereotypes, misunderstanding and conflict. It is therefore crucial for intercultural professionals to address how these images may be viewed and potentially misconstrued and to encourage trainees to examine them critically to determine how people are being represented and what subtle messages are being conveyed. This interactive session will provide an opportunity to analyze a series of film clips, discuss the benefits and the challenges of using film in a training program, and present practical tips in which to incorporate them.
